Hammer

Of all the Scandinavian symbols Mjöllner, Thor’s hammer, is the best known and most powerful. Used in Thor cults, in ceremonies of all kinds, from weddings to funerals, it also functions as protection, as it was used as an amulet.

Mjöllner is a magical, ritualistic instrument. The hammer was used by the ancient Scandinavian people in the consecration of marriages, births and funerals, oaths, land appropriation, fertility rituals of all kinds (womb, soil, harvest).

Its representation is found in sculptures connected to Thor, images in runic stones or adornments found in Scandinavian tombs. The more complex drawings have on top of the cape a figure formed by fixed eyes that are believed to be a representation of Thor when confronting Jörmungandr. Being found in tombs believed that the Vikings used it as protection in life and after death when Thor would continue to protect them.
